February Big Mountain Highlights

It’s been an exciting couple weeks for the Big Mountain Team.  Snow started falling just in time for our Jan 31 IFSA Comp on 1 Bowl.  The athletes got more ambitious as the day rolled on and the snow piled up!  We received incredible support from many ski brands and shops allowing us to give each category winner a new pair of skis while raising over $1200 for NWAC in our raffle.  It was quite the celebration of skill and aggressive skiing shared with athletes from all over the Western US.

As noted above, the Meadows Challenge was a fun day of competition with lots of fresh snow to compliment some great skiing.  Shout out to coaches Ansel and Mari for taking on larger roles with hosting the event and serving as TD and head judge, respectively.  Excited to see these two continue to grow in our program.

We could not have pulled off these successful events without the support of our volunteers, led by Charlotte VanDam!  It makes each comp that much more special knowing it's delivered by our faithful parents and supporters.  We are looking for a volunteer coordinator to fill Charlotte’s ski boots next winter.  Please reach out if you would like to learn more while Charlotte is available to answer any questions.

We’re looking forward to more fun days in the resort and backcountry as we approach the final month of the program.

IFSA Bogus Basin Comp Recap

Big Mountain athletes in attendance; John Maher, Kenji Hoshi, Theo VanDan and Hunter Johnston with coach Chris Maher.  Event was IFSA Jr 2 @ Bogus Basin, ID

We all enjoyed a fantastic day of free-sking on Friday 2/21 - bluebird day with plenty of deep powder stashes from the storm earlier in the week.

Saturday 2/22 was comp day, U19 boys dropping in last with less than ideal conditions, warm and snow was a bit hard-pack but nothing these Mt Hood boys can’t handle.  Venue was basically at the top of the mountain called Omar’s inspiration.  All competitors ran clean lines and landed their jumps/drops.  Hunter filling is as “assistant coach” and keeping the stoke high at the starting gates.  MRT made a strong showing on podium with Kenji Hoshi in 1st, John Maher in 5th and Theo in 7th…..and a very happy coach!!
