Meet the Coaches
"These coaches are the backbone of the organization. They are all in, and MRT could not be more proud of the coaches we have in this organization. MRT gives a great coaching experience our athletes!"
- Jean-Pierre Veillet, MRT President
John Rust, Program Director
Meadows Race Team is the organization that brought John to Hood River more than 20 years ago. He has served as program manager for Mt. Hood Summer Ski Camps for 10 years prior to taking the Hood River Community Education Director position in 2009. With a long career on Mt Hood John Rust is proudly back as the Program Director for the Meadows Race team. As a vibrant and active community leader, John has taken the reins of MRT and quickly gained the respect and admiration of this Ski community.
Katy Loewy, Alpine Head Coach
MRT is excited to announce Katy Loewy as their next Head Coach. In March we kicked off a national search for our head coach position. We took input from our athletes, parents and board members on the type of candidate we desired. While all skills are important it was clear that our club was looking for someone that could compliment that with a commitment to our mission and values. Words that rang true were role model, community builder, and great communicator. There was an overwhelming desire to make our athletes feel safe-valued and supported.
"Katy grew up in the Seattle area ski racing for Team Alpental Snoqualmie (TAS). She then went on to race for the Gonzaga University club team. After graduating, she spent several winters working as a part-time coach for TAS while balancing a career in the Seattle tech industry. She worked with athletes from from ages U8 through U19 adding to her experience with different age groups and skill levels. After many years working behind a desk, Katy was drawn back to her roots and passion for skiing and decided to pursue coaching full-time. She moved to Sun Valley, ID and worked for the Snow Sports program before finding her way to the beautiful Hood River area. She spent last winter splitting time between White Salmon and Snoqualmie Pass WA working as a full-time U16-19 coach/FIS coach for TAS. She holds a USSA level 100 certification and plans to continue her coaching education moving forward. When Katy is not on the snow coaching, you can find her backcountry skiing, riding her mountain bike, rock climbing or searching for the next adventure!"
Big Mountain Head Coach
Meadows Race Team is excited to announce the addition of a Big Mountain Program for the 2019-20 season and has hired Ben McKinley as the Head Coach. Program Director John Rust says, “Our board identified an incredible opportunity to expand our offerings during the 2019-2020 season with a big mountain program. Hiring Ben was an incredible move for our organization.” Big mountain has many elements first and foremost being “Big Mountain skiing”, but also includes Backcountry Skiing, Ski Mountaineering, Skier Cross, and Ski Mountaineering. We will stay true to our core while expanding as interest and capacity allow.
