Western Region FIS Open at Mt. Hood MeadowsCongratulations goes out to all who helped with the 2008 Western Region FIS Open Series held at Mt. Hood MeadowsApril 10-13, 2008. This was an awesome display of teamwork, cooperation and some really good skiing. We were able put on high caliber events for the 80+ athletes whocame from all over the west to compete in the technical events. Literally hundreds of volunteers came out in support of these races as well as the entire Mt. Hood Meadows Resort Staff.

“Thanks to everyone who gave of their time and contributed to this Alicia McCord in slalom action on Sunday.effort” said MRT President Karl Wardrop, “without your support we could not have pulled this off and delivered the high level of racing that MRT is known for”.

MRT also had some success on snow with Kelley Fitzpatrick capturing the two Giant Slalom wins, Alicia McCord with a 3rd in Giant Slalom and Kaytlin Hughes with a 3rd in Slalom. For all of the results of the WR FIS Open, click here>> Official FIS Results

This has been our focus all season, TEAMWORK!” said J3 Coach Kelsey Holmer. “This will help to motivate our 1st Year J3’s and incoming J4’s to step up the intensity during the 2009 Season”. We are building a program that is sustainable. “We are seeing marked improvement” stated Program Director Curtis Shuck, “In 2006 no MRT J3’s were named to the PNSA Junior Olympic Team, in 2007 we had one athlete make the team and this year we had three athletes who earned a spot and a strong group of skiers who were right on the bubble”. Tracy takes position with US Ski Team 3.26.2008

Jim TracyCoach Jim Tracy announced today that after much deliberation has accepted a key position with the United States Ski Team and will be resigning from the staff of the Meadows Race Team effective April 15, 2008.

“We are sorry to see Jim go as he has been a wonderful addition to our program” commented MRT President Karl Wardrop, “We wish him every success in his new endeavors”.

The club will begin a national recruiting process to replace Tracy and hopes to have someone named to the position by June 1, 2008.

“Jim will certainly be missed by the athletes, parents and staff. Jim was an integral part of the new focus of the Meadows Race Team, one which the Board and the staff is committed to and will continue in his absence” Said Program Director Curtis Shuck, “We have already begun making contacts with some potential candidates and will keep this process going until we have found a replacement that “fits” with the organization and who is committed to the direction of MRT”.

“We will transition some of Jim’s duties to other staff members and expect business as usual until we fill his position” stated Shuck “Jim has been awesome to work with and is a great friend, he is making the move for all of the right reasons and we need to support him because of that. What is a tough pill for MRT is a bonus for US Skiing and we can know that we are responsible in part for helping the US Team take their program to the next level!”

MRT - MLK Jump Camp for Juniors a BIG Success 1.22.2008

The Junior Team Members (and some Mitey Mites!) who participated in the MRT Jump Camp this past weekend had a an awesome opportunity to improve their speed skills in a controlled and safe environment. The Meadows Resort cooperation made this all possible and the training included elements such as “Pole Jumpers” a “Wave Track” and a “Jump” onto Apollo Face. Coach Jim Tracy who led the camp said “We are focused on the fundamentals and have seen our skiers take advantage of this camp and really work on developing these important skills”. High winds and frigid temps cut short the camp and forced the team to train on Stadium on Monday. This did allow for an hour of “High Speed” Free Skiing on Super G and Downhill Skis followed up by Slalom for the J1/J2’s and Gs training for the J3’s and J4’s.

Hood Meadows on a great event!

1Also, A Big Thanks to the parents that helped out on the race as volunteers or supported our athletes by carrying coats and cheering on our racers!  This is such an important aspect of keeping our young skiers fired up. Results

The MRT Team Spirit carried the day and that attitude began with our World Class Mitey Mite Coaching Staff!  We had nothing but professional coaching and representation for our competitors at the race.

1Congratulations to all of our young MRT Racers, you are the future of our Sport.  We had skiers ranging in ability from the first timers to three time Buddy Werner Team Members, and at the end of the day, each MRT racer gave it their all and came away better for it, gaining any number of important life lessons and for some, coveted hardware.  Please remember that we measure our success using the Triple Bottom Line approach:

* FUN & Sustainability
* Education & Improvement
* Balanced Success

MRT Junior’s Rock Mt. Bachelor12.17.2007

McNabb - photo by Todd McNabb32 Meadows Race Team Junior Team Athletes competed in the Russ Read Memorial Giant Slalom held this weekend at Mt. Bachelor, OR.  Due to exceptionally low snow, the race could not be held on Cliffhanger, the trail that this event is normally hosted on.  The Management at Mt. Bachelor graciously allowed this race to be held on the Thunderbird Run, located at the Main Base Area and accessed by the Pine Martin Lift.  This is a Championship venue that has hosted prestigious races such as the U.S. National J2 Championships, Junior Olympics and numerous PNSA Northwest Cup Championships over the years.  With low snow, Thunderbird was especially challenging with the amount of terrain that was exposed, not to mention the man made snow!

MacKenzie Lisac - photo by Todd McNabbThis was a weekend of personal bests and self discovery, of trust and teamwork, of commitment and the understanding that sometimes no matter how much we think that we have mastered our Sport, we learn that we still have a long way to go!

Almost every MRT Athlete improved their start/finish positions, so much so that we can only report on the largest margin for Women and Men and encourage you refer to the Mount Bachelor Website http://www.mbsef.org/results to get all of the details.

MRT Youth Ski League Teams Training At Easyrider12.17.2007

Kevin Bracy - PhotoOur YSL Teams trained at Meadows over the weekend and got some great training in on Wall Flower Trail off of the Easy Rider Lift.  Meadows Resort made a special effort just for us this weekend and we need to remember to thank them for their continued support of MRT!

Our Youth Ski League Teams worked on stance and balance fundamentals in a controlled environment.  We were able to get in many runs and made some very significant progress for only being the middle of December.  Keeping everything in perspective and continuing to strive for a mastery of the skiing fundamentals, our YSL Groups will continue a balance of free skiing and special training elements such as were practiced on Easy Rider this weekend.

Thanks to our dedicated and talented YSL Coaching Staff for their commitment to our athletes and to their success and growth in the sport of alpine skiing as they focus on the skiing fundamentals.

MRT Gets New Timing Shack!12.7.2007

dThanks to the efforts of John Wiitala along with many others, the Meadows Race Team has a brand new timing shack ready to go for the Winterstart Slalom Races.  This thing is full out state of the art and completely set up.

This is another prime example of MRT’s dedication to excellence at every level.  John and his volunteers donated their time and received material largely free of charge to put this new shack together.  These guys have been working on this for months and John was like a proud father yesterday as he delivered the Timing Shack to the parking lot at Meadows.  There was a tear in his eye and pride in his heart as the Meadows Crews towed the new Timing Shack to its temporary storage location.

Great work to everyone who contributed freely of their time

FIS Races at Meadows Postponed11.26.2007

dAlthough one of the few western resorts open at this time, as of  Monday, Nov. 26, the Meadows organizing committee determine that there was an insufficient base to ensure a successful event. Therefore, the  WR FIS Open at  Mt . Hood Meadows originally scheduled for Dec 6-9, has been postponed indefinitely. Hopefully, the race will be rescheduled for later in the season.
